Connecting Creatives: Herbal Flow

The Six Degrees Creative brand is all about connection. With the Connecting Creatives segment the goal is to highlight creatives and entrepreneurs in our communities and share their journey. No matter the outlet or industry, it is important we support each other’s growth both professionally and personally. Together we can make being a creative or running a small business sustainable and successful.

This week we highlight the home-made herbal remedies created by Taylor Rusak of Herbal Flow. With a deeply rooted passion for herbalism and holistic wellness Taylor began her business as a way to inspire others to connect with nature and learn more about the natural medicines that surround us. Check out how Taylor got started on her small business journey below!

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to be part of Connecting Creatives. Can you tell us more about your background and how you got started on your creative journey?

Hey Zach! I am really thankful and honored to be featured on your blog. Last year, during quarantine, I decided to dive deeper into my passion for herbalism and holistic wellness by making my own herbal-based products and remedies. I have worked in the service industry for years, and even had a job in a lab after graduating with my Biology degree. Neither path was satisfying to me, and I knew I wanted to work for myself. During quarantine, I finally had the time to invest in myself and my passions, thus Herbal Flow was born!

After making some herbal products for my friends, the overwhelming positive response was amazing. I realized this was what I enjoy doing so why not make it my job. I was also inspired by my friend & fellow small business owner, Anna, to start my own business. I created Herbal Flow with the intention to encourage others to embark on their own healing journey using the natural medicine that is all around us. Lately, I have been reading books, getting out in nature, and taking classes to grow my knowledge. It has been beautiful & exciting, and also quite humbling.

What keeps you engaged and passionate about your small business and creative endeavors?

The breadth of knowledge there is to herbalism! These practices have been around for centuries, with many different cultures, tribes, and regions of the world working with plants in different ways. As long as I keep learning and growing my knowledge, I can keep offering my best self for others and Herbal Flow. I am grateful to be on this path of discovery and sharing what I’ve learned about herbal medicine with others.

If you could give advice to your younger business self what would it be?

If you’re thinking about doing it, just do it! It can be a little intimidating and vulnerable to put yourself out there for the world to see. If you never try, you will never know if it is the right path for you or not.

Always trust your intuition and most importantly yourself! I have learned how to trust myself and my vision more than ever just from starting a small business and following my passion. Once you learn to trust yourself, the work gets easier and the “why” gets stronger.

What is a challenge you have faced as a creative/small business and how have you overcome it?

Time management! I feel like there is ALWAYS something to do, and sometimes that burdens me rather than motivates me. My mind is constantly going back and forth on all the things I want to do and should be doing. With what seems like a million things to do, I have learned that taking it one step at a time is a great place to start. I try to set myself up for success by making weekly to-do lists, setting goals, and finding time for myself to relax so I can work at my best.

What do you want people to take away from your small business?

Herbs are for everyone! Working with different herbs and plants has had such a positive impact on my physical and mental well-being. I want people to know that caring for yourself now is only going to benefit the future you. It is empowering to take your health into your own hands and reconnect with nature while doing it.

What is the next milestone for you?

The next milestone for me is set up booths at farmers markets and festivals on a regular basis. I love that I can sell my products online, but I feel the real magic and connection happens in person.

How can we support you and is there anything else you would like to share about your business?

I create all my products with organic ingredients and I never use synthetic fragrances or dyes. I try to incorporate sustainability into my business by using compostable packaging and non-plastic containers that people can re-use. I also shop for herbs & supplies locally and have even started my own herb garden.

You can support my business by following my journey on social media and through mentions and tags on social media. If you like something I have made for you, spread the word!
