Connecting Creatives: Space Travelers Studios

The Six Degrees Creative brand is all about connection. With the Connecting Creatives segment the goal is to highlight creatives and entrepreneurs in our communities and share their journey. No matter the outlet or industry, it is important we support each other’s growth both professionally and personally. Together we can make being a creative or running a small business sustainable and successful.

This week we highlight Space Travelers Studios. Space Travelers Studios, the brainchild of ChuckD, has been channeling their love for live music and community and creating a space for local artists and creatives to showcase their talent. Most recently, Space Travelers Studios has collaborated with Same Same But Different on the Same Same But Distant live stream series featuring an incredible lineup of local San Diego musicians.

Hi! Thank you for taking the time to be part of Connecting Creatives. Can you tell us more about your background and how you got started on your creative journey?

Thanks for the opportunity Zach and an extra special thank you for being one of the OG Space Travelers. Space Traveler Studios began its operations as a guerilla backyard movement that provided a physical space for artists to perform and the community to connect.

As long-time patrons of the arts, the studio’s organizers saw firsthand how the idea of the “starving artist” was amplified exponentially in the time of a global pandemic. We began to build our reputation in the grass roots creative community by investing in local musicians and artists to curate, organize, and promote events focused around creativity, community, and connection.

The main goal of the Space Traveler Studios' venture is to stimulate the creative economy by providing a physical and digital platform for artists to grow and the community to connect. The organizers share a unique blend of career experiences across the fields of retail operations, merchandising, analytics and consulting.

Leveraging nearly a quarter century of combined professional experience, the organizers want to pivot from contributing to the corporate bottom line to contributing to the bottom line of the local creative community.

In these initial events, Space Traveler Studios received an abundance of gratitude across artists, musicians and patrons in the community for providing a platform for them to create and connect. With the additions of a vendor marketplace, visual art demonstrations, resident bartenders/baristas, performance artists and live art demonstrations; the events continue to improve by providing a dynamic entertainment offering.

What keeps you engaged and passionate about your small business and creative endeavors?

We find ourselves in a unique position to be of service to the local music and arts community. Establishing a platform in which we can share and promote art to the community has been so enjoyable. We have been so incredibly impressed by the local creative community and their pivot in the time of the pandemic.

What we have witnessed over the last year is truly remarkable. We go to OB every Wednesday for a mini music festival with pop up concerts on every corner, and we can't get enough. Our insatiable thirst for live music, a deep rooted love for the arts and the never ending desire for genuine connection is what keeps us moving forward.

If you could give advice to your younger business self what would it be?

Stay Patient. Stay Humble. Tune In To Your Passions & Dial Your Skills.

You Need To Refine Your Vibe, Before You Find Your Tribe

What is a challenge you have faced as a creative/small business and how have you overcome it?

The world has long turned to the arts as a much-needed retreat from the mundane and ordinary patterns of society. However, in the pandemic of 2020 sent shockwaves through the global economy. One of those hit hardest was the creative and entertainment economy.

Galleries, studios, theaters, venues, markets and festivals scrambled to stay afloat, and amongst all the chaos there were many casualties. The very idea of social gatherings and P2P interaction was nearly killed off.

However, from the ashes, a phoenix of new wave creativity is rising. Grassroots movements are popping up uniting communities through art and creative expression while each uniquely contributing to this new wave experience economy.

The local music and arts community has shown such resilience in this crazy time. We believe that the secret sauce has been a mix of hustle, grit, and a mutual shared love for the arts.

What do you want people to take away from your small business?

Quarantine Dreams Can Become Your Reality. All it takes is a sprinkle of hustle, a dash of teamwork and a heaping teaspoon of love. Look inside, find the artist within and share that art with the world.

What is the next milestone for you?

It has been such a trip already!! The highlights for us have been growing with all the incredible artists in the community. We have been fortunate to collaborate with talented artists such as The Higgs, Disco Penny Lane, Garrett Morris, Anzio , Rose Organic, Brian Shay, Guuddha, Vezy, simple, Gneiss, Universe Peoples and Schwartz Productions.

We have recently teamed up with the Same Same But Different team to produce “Same Same but Distant”, a live streaming series, which has been so fun to collaborate on. It has allowed us to collaborate with a bunch of awesome local artists on a mission to bring more live music to the community and the world.

Having Kaipora do their thing in our space has been a goal of the studio since day one. Through collaboration and teamwork, we just recently achieved that goal and we can't wait for the next time we get to work with them. Aviator Stash just kicked off the Same Same But Distant live stream series and in the coming weeks we will have Red Giant Project, Dekadent Shaman, Purple Kief and Universe Peoples (again!!).

In the not so distant future, we plan to leverage this ever growing creative network to host larger scale events as state regulations permit. The spring calendar is nearly full, and I promise ya’ll there are some exciting opportunities come summer.

Hope To See All You Astronauts At Space Camp. Stay Tuned!!
